The 'Tuna King' is a well-known presence at the traditional event.

A massive bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the calendar year.

The successful bid for the 535-pound fish came from the operator of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates outlets throughout Japan and overseas.

"An inaugural tuna signals good luck," commented the business owner, a familiar bidder at the yearly new year's auction.

Known as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is noted for making high bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.

Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent

Following the auction, the successful bidder admitted to journalists that he was "astonished at the amount," noting, "I believed we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This most recent acquisition exceeds his own record purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He bid 155 million yen in 2013.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Despite once commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to shatter his own record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously associated with exorbitant prices. Last year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be featured at its restaurants across Japan.

The intense activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has become a must-see tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The record-priced tuna was quickly sliced up for customers at the bidder's sushi establishments shortly after the auction was finished.

"I believe like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after eating something so fortune-bringing as the year starts," said one satisfied diner.
