Explosion Takes Three Police Officers During Eviction Operation in Northern Italy
Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly intentional detonation from gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.
Event Timeline
The explosion took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property in the vicinity of the city of Verona to carry out an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri force.
Arrests and Aftermath
One male and one female got detained at the scene and another man who fled following the incident was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been taken to medical facility.
The detonation could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area showed the structure left as a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.
Background and Motive
The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, explained the property was facing an removal notice due to financial obligations accrued by the property owners.
Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents triggered the explosion.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief the police commander stated to news outlets.
A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he said.
Petrol bombs were also found at the site, the interior minister stated.
Casualties and Damage
Injured individuals by the explosion comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
He believed the blast had taken place on a story above the doorway and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he said members had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being opened”.
Neighbor Statements
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors stated to reporters, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
