McLaren Racing Attributes Crash to Opposing Racers for Piastri-Norris Collision

Wheel flies off McLaren after impact between team drivers

A wheel comes loose from the car of Norris after he collided with team-mate Oscar Piastri at the opening of the US GP short race.

McLaren F1 team executives Brown and Stella pointed to competitors for the incident between Piastri and Lando Norris at the start of the US GP sprint race.

Piastri, leading his teammate in the standings by twenty-two points, crashed into his fellow McLaren driver after hitting the Nico Hulkenberg.

The crash eliminated both team drivers out of the event, along with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, who was on the inside of the Sauber driver.

Team Executives Voice Frustration Over Crash

Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, stated to broadcasters that some of the driving at the front was "unprofessional", stating: "Obviously Hulkenberg made contact with Oscar and he had no business being where he was."

McLaren F1 boss Andrea Stella added: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the opportunity to race."

"It's surprising that some drivers with a lot of expertise don't act with necessary care. Enter the first corner, ensure you don't damage other drivers and carry on."

McLaren suggested that the team principal was referring to both Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin driver.

Differing Perspectives on the Crash

However, 1996 world champion Damon Hill, commentating for a sports broadcast, said he thought the Australian had not demonstrated enough awareness of the dangers of the first corner of an Formula 1 event when he decided to move inside to try to overtake his teammate.

The Australian had a better start than Norris and at first challenged on the outside on the ascending approach to the turn.

But he then cut back in an effort to get a advantage on his teammate on the exit, only to hit Hulkenberg.

Driver Reactions After the Collision

Piastri said: "Not ideal but I did not see what occurred, I tried to move inside on Lando and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then were struck and it sent me into Lando. A shame."

His teammate said: "I just was struck, right? I was not at fault. Behind us events unfolded and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more thoroughly. It's more drivers behind just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."

The Aston Martin driver said: "At one point I thought I was in the correct position on the inner side, but some cars came very quickly from the outer side changing direction and then I was there in the center."

The Sauber driver, who had qualified a season-best fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the strong performance from the previous day in the trash. Just chaotic."

"Piastri turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the undercut and exit of the first corner but I can't just disappear."

"I had Alonso challenge on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Oscar steered inward and the collision was inevitable."

Aftermath and McLaren's Reaction

The team will analyze the incident with their drivers but only after the race weekend. Both vehicles needed significant repairs before qualifying session at 10 PM BST on the weekend.

Stella said: "In general disappointed but we take it on the chin, we are now focusing on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."

"Our team holds a competitive place from our competitiveness point of view so I trust we have the opportunity to race, compete fairly and capitalise on our capabilities."

"Championship points are the key thing, I don't want to talk about mal-intent, just caution. A little more care would be good for all involved."

Standings Impact

The race was won by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now 55 points behind the Australian and thirty-three behind of the Briton.

The team boss said: "The implication is what the maths says - we lost eight championship points with both racers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two skilled racers. We look forward to just some standard competition."

The Red Bull driver said he was taking the title race one event at a time.
