The people of Israel commemorate second remembrance of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace negotiations proceed
Citizens have assembled around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in Gaza.
The assault saw over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel responded by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"The aggressive adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The national leadership delayed official commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but events still occurred across the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in the coastal city. Put together by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.
Peace Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the proposal.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the negotiations said that an evening round of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.
The official stated the day's discussions concluded without tangible results, amid differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not restart hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He added that the discussions are "challenging and have still not achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
Key Points in Talks
- A lasting truce
- The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
- After-conflict management of the territory
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released none of us will feel safe."
"After we see all home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.
Near the prime minister's residence in the capital, people assembled to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Protester one woman stated: "We must do every compromise required for the captives to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."
Research now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israelis desire the war to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the captives.
Gaza Situation
At the site of the gathering, grieving people came together to honor the dead.
From the site, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the heavy Israeli shelling continued.
In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and locality areas and in the eastern area of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.
"Once the night arrives, the fear arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, described.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, especially my smallest child who rests his head on me all night."
"Every second we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will return to us."
Medical Crisis
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had taken in the bodies of six people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis said additional dead people had been brought there. A person was died by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south region, medics reported.
