The retail giant Implements Buying Restrictions on Pokémon TCG Products

As a notable development, Walmart has started enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can buy during a single visit. This new rule was activated as of early November, according to an internal announcement distributed to employees.

Addressing Scalper Activity

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that depicted a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video faced significant criticism for permitting the bulk transaction to go through.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The updated guideline states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. However, the wording has sparked debate due to its vagueness. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could buy five premium Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.

Additionally, since the limit is based on each visit, in theory a determined scalper could return repeatedly—buying five items each time—to gather large quantities over several hours.

The Scalping Phenomenon

To most players, such efforts might seem over the top, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. In recent years, speculators have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the game's rising popularity.

Certain buyers seek to resell sealed items at a markup, whereas some search for rare cards that can command sky-high values. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.

Looking Ahead

The new rule coincides with the imminent release of the latest Pokémon expansion, coming on November 14th. Early listings already show chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex listed for nearly $1,500, highlighting the persistent interest and potential scalper target.

With any luck, Walmart's restrictions will help reduce bulk purchases and increase access for true fans and everyday enthusiasts as well.
